Resume Overview
A resume is used to showcase your professional and educational experiences that are aligned to your career goals.
The purpose of a resume is to capture the attention of the reader, while also listing your unique qualities, skills and
accomplishments in a concise, organized fashion. The resume may be utilized to make a favorable impression, so
decide what should be included based on the job position and/or graduate school you are applying for, along with
highlighting the skills and experiences most relevant to the role, company and industry you are applying for.
Resume Checklist
Content:
Contact Information: Include your full name, professional email address, and phone number. Consider
adding a link to your LinkedIn profle, as well as your location.
Professional Summary/Profle (Optional): Briefy introduce yourself and your career goals or highlight
your skills and experience relevant to the job you’re applying for.
Education: List your educational background, including the institution’s name, location, degree earned,
and graduation year. Include relevant projects or academic achievements (e.g., Dean’s List). Start with your
current degree at CSUSB. You do not need to list your high school.
Experience: List your work experience in reverse chronological order (most recent frst). Include company
name, location, job title, and dates (month and year) of employment. Use strong action verbs and bullet
points to describe your achievements and responsibilities. Quantify your results whenever possible (e.g.,
“Increased sales by 15%”).
Skills: Showcase your technical skills (e.g., software profciency) and soft skills (e.g., communication,
teamwork). Tailor the skills section to the specifc job you’re applying for.
Formatting:
One Page (Preferred): Aim for a one-page resume, especially for entry-level positions. Resume
length may difer depending on the industry.
Clear Formatting: Use clear and consistent formatting throughout your resume. Choose a professional,
easy-to-read font (e.g., Arial, Times New Roman).
Sections & Headings: Separate sections with clear headings and bullet points to make your resume easy
to scan. Stick to a single column layout to ensure it is applicant tracking systems (ATS) friendly.
Margins & Whitespace: Maintain consistent margins and use white space efectively to improve
readability.
Proofread: Proofread meticulously for typos and grammatical errors. Typos can create a negative
impression.
