Professional Attire Guidelines
• Research the Dress Code: View the organization’s online presence to get a sense of how formal it is. Some
industries may have specifc expectations for attire, while others may be more fexible. When in doubt, it is
better to be on the side of slightly overdressed than underdressed.
• Dress Conservatively: Avoid clothing that is
too casual, inappropriate, fashy or distractiing.
• Cultural Identity: The intersection of cultural
identity and professional attire can allow
you to express your authentic self within
the workplace. Finding ways to incorporate
cultural elements into professional attire can
be a form of self-expression and pride. For
example, wearing accessories such as a scarf,
earrings, bracelet, or a tie specifc to your
heritage is an exeplory way to feel like yourself
and still professional.
• Adapt to the Environment: Consider the organization or event’s geographical location and cultural norms
when choosing your attire. For instance, what may be considered appropriate business attire in one region or
country may difer. Take cues from local customs and norms to ensure your attire is respectful and appropriate.
• Prioritize Comfort: While it is important to dress professionally, it is equally important to feel comfortable and
confdent in your attire.
• Avoid Overdoing It: Avoid going overboard with
accessories, clothing, and/or fragrance. Aim for a balanced
and polished look that highlights professionalism.
• Seek Feedback: If you are unsure about what to wear,
consider seeking feedback from mentors, colleagues, or
professionals in your feld or the Career Center. We can
provide valuable insights and guidance on appropriate
attire for interviews and conferences.
