Networking
College is about building a foundation for your future career. Often seen as a mysterious activity for professionals,
networking is also a powerful tool for college students. Here is why you should start networking and how to do it
efectively.
Why Network in College?
Building connections with professionals in your feld ofers
a wealth of benefts. You can gain insider knowledge about
diferent career paths, learn about potential openings before
they9re publicly advertised, and get valuable advice from
experienced individuals. Networking allows you to ofer your
own knowledge, experience, and support to build mutually
benefcial relationships. Through networking, you will build
confdence during interviews and presentations and be more
comfortable speaking with people you9ve already met.
Where to Network?
• Campus Resources: Start with the Career Center, they host workshops on networking and can help you
connect students with alumni or industry professionals (see pg. 17).
• Clubs and Events: Get involved in clubs or organizations related to your feld. Attending industry events,
conferences, or guest speaker talks.
• Online Platforms: Connect with professionals on LinkedIn (see pg. 25). Join online forums or groups relevant
to your interests.
Making Connections:
• Be Approachable: Start conversations with professors, guest speakers, or professionals you meet at events.
• Do Your Research: Before approaching someone, research their background and have specifc questions
prepared.
• Focus on Building Relationships: Networking is not about a quick job ofer. Focus on building genuine
connections and ofering value to your network.
Maintaining Connections:
• Follow-up: After meeting someone, send a thank-you email, or handwritten note reiterating your interests
and highlighting any key takeaways from your conversation (see pg. 29).
• Stay Connected: Connect on LinkedIn and follow their work. Occasionally, reach out with updates on your
progress or relevant articles.
Networking can initially feel intimidating, but with these tips, you can start building meaningful connections that
will beneft you throughout your college journey. Everyone starts somewhere, so take the frst step and watch your
network grow!
